XFOR: NNTP: History File Corrupted When Larger Than 2 GB (173909)

SYMPTOMS

The Internet News Service (INS) history file, History.hsh, gets corrupted and loses articles if the file size is allowed to grow larger than 2 GB.

CAUSE

INS does not account for 64-bit file lengths, so files larger than 2 GB are not updated correctly. INS uses a 32-bit value to hold the file offset, which is not large enough for a 2-GB file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the fix referenced below or wait for the next Microsoft Commercial Internet Server service pack.

With the fix applied, Nntpsvc.dll is modified to use 64 bits to maintain the history files offset.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in MCIS version 1.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
