PRJ: Unable to Quit Project When Low on Virtual Memory (173160)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to quit Microsoft Project, you are unable to quit the program. If you are prompted to save the Global.mpt file, and you click Yes, Microsoft Project does not save the file and remains open; if you click Cancel Microsoft Project remains open.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when there is not enough available virtual memory. In this case, Microsoft Project does not have enough free space to save the Global.mpt file, so it remains open.

WORKAROUND

Free up memory by closing any open documents or programs and then try to close Microsoft Project again.

If you still cannot quit Microsoft Project, follow these steps:

NOTE: Following these steps will result in losing any changes you made to your files since you last saved them.

Windows 95

  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.
  2. In the Close Program dialog box, click Microsoft Project and then click End Task.
  3. If you are prompted to end the task now or cancel the operation, click End Task.
  4. Click Close.

Windows NT, Version 4.0

  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.
  2. Click Task Manager.
  3. Click the Applications tab.
  4. Click Microsoft Project and then click End Task.
  5. If you are prompted to end the task now or cancel the operation, click End Task.
  6. Click Close.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
