PRJ: Wrong Result Linking Task, Resource w/ Identical Names (172890)

SYMPTOMS

You receive unexpected results when you link tasks if the name of the task and the resource are identical.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when using task usage view. In this view, Microsoft Project searches the Names column, and finds the assignment name before it finds the task name.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change either the task name or resource name so that they are not identical.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

When you link a task where the predecessor task name and a resource name are identical, the relationship is based on the resource name rather than the task name. In the following steps, the result is that task "T2" will be linked to the task that has resource "A1" assigned to it rather than the actual task named "A1."
  1. Create a task called "X".
  2. Assign a resource to "X" called "A1."
  3. Create two additional tasks, one called "T2" and the other called "A1."
  4. On the View menu, click Task Usage.
  5. Double-click the task named "T2" and click the Predecessor tab.
  6. In the Task Name field, type "A1" (do not select A1 in the drop-down list).
