PUB97: Can't Read Setup.exe when Installing. (172365)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q172365 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to install Microsoft Publisher 97 from compact disc onto a
computer running Microsoft Windows NT 3.51 or Windows 95, you may
receive either of the following error messages.
Although you can see the Setup.exe file on the compact disc, you cannot
copy the
file from the compact disc to your local hard disk or to a network
location. However, you can copy other files from the compact disc to
the local disk or the network location.
NOTE: These errors only occur when you install Publisher under Windows NT
3.51
or Windows 95. Publisher 97 is not supported under Windows NT 3.5 and
installs
without error under Windows NT 4.0.
CAUSE
These errors occur because the file names of the Setup.exe file and other
setup-
related files are in lower case (Setup.lst) or mixed case (Setup.lst) on
the
compact disc. The Windows NT 3.51 CD file system (CDFS) cannot read these
files.
NOTE: Usually, if this problem occurs under Windows 95, the problem is
related
to your having 16-bit device drivers configured for your CD-ROM drive. To
resolve this problem you will need to install a 32-bit Windows 95-
compatible
device driver for your CD-ROM drive.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.
NOTE: If you are using Windows 95, try Method 3 first.
Method 1: Obtain the Floppy Disk Version of Publisher 97
To obtain Microsoft Publisher 97 on floppy disks, call the Microsoft Order
Desk
at (800) 360-7561. If you are outside the United States, contact the
Microsoft
subsidiary for your area. To locate your subsidiary, see the Microsoft
World
Wide Offices Web site at:
Method 2: Create an Administrative Installation of Publisher 97
You can install Publisher 97 from a Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 computer
to a
file server. After you install Publisher 97 on the server, you can install
Publisher 97 from the server to the Windows NT 3.5.1 client computer.
For more information about administrative installations, please read the
Network.hlp file, which is located on the Publisher 97 compact disc.
Method 3: Update the CD-ROM Driver (Windows 95 Only)
Update the 16-bit CD-ROM device driver to a 32-bit Windows 95 device
driver. To
obtain the updated driver, you should contact the manufacturer of your CD-
ROM
device.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.
