  • Microsoft Outlook 97

This article was previously published under Q171109

SYMPTOMS

When you display a Microsoft Outlook 97 item using Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications or Visual Basic Scripting Edition (VBScript), you are not able to use the item's Next or Previous commands to move to following or previous items in the folder.

MORE INFORMATION

If you manually open the item (without using code), the commands are available and perform as expected.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

Microsoft provides programming examples for illustration only, without warranty either expressed or implied, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and/or fitness for a particular purpose. For more information about the support options available from Microsoft, please see the following page on the World Wide Web: The following Visual Basic for Applications code illustrates the problem:
   Sub DisplayMailItem()
      Dim ol As Outlook.Application
      Dim olns As NameSpace
      Dim MyInbox As Object
      Dim MyItems As Object
      Set ol = New Outlook.Application
      Set olns = ol.GetNamespace("MAPI")
' Set MyInbox to the user's default Inbox.
      Set MyInbox = olns.GetDefaultFolder(olFolderInbox)
      ' Display the Inbox.
      MyInbox.Display
' Set MyItems to the collection of items in the Inbox.
      Set MyItems = MyInbox.Items
      ' Display the second item.
      MyItems(2).Display
   End Sub

When you run this sample code to display an Outlook message, the Previous and Next buttons on the message's toolbar do not function, and if you click Previous or Next on the View menu, no choices are available.
