Cannot Hear Attached .wav Files in Microsoft Chat (171012)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Chat 2.0 for Windows NT 4.0
  • Microsoft Chat 2.0 for Windows 95

This article was previously published under Q171012

SYMPTOMS

When a chat participant sends you a message that plays a .wav (or sound) file in Microsoft Chat, the comic strip pane may indicate that a .wav file was sent, but you may not hear it played.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if either of the following conditions exists:

  • You do not have on your local hard disk the .wav file that the sending chat client is trying to play on your computer.
  • You have the .wav file on your local hard disk, but its location is not included in the Sound Search path.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

If you do not have the .wav file that that the sending chat client is trying to play on your local hard disk, obtain it and place it in the Windows\Media folder.

Method 2

If you already have the .wav file on your local hard disk, include its location in the Sound Search path. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the View menu in Chat, click Options, and then click the Settings tab.
  2. In the Sound Search Path box, type the full path(s) to the folder in which the .wav file is located, separating each path with a semicolon (;). For example, if you want Microsoft Chat to search the Windows\Media and Windows\Temp folders for .wav files, type the following paths in the Sound Search Path box:
          c:\windows\media;c:\windows\temp

NOTE: The Windows\Media folder is the default Sound Search path for Microsoft Chat.
  3. Click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Chat does not play a .wav file sent by another chat participant unless you have the .wav file on your local hard disk, and its location is specified in the Sound Search path. This behavior prevents a chat participant from generating significant network traffic by sending large .wav files to unsuspecting recipients.
