This article was previously published under Q170744 SYMPTOMS
When you install Internet Explorer version 4.0 or Windows 98, some Internet
Mail and News settings may be lost. In particular, user interface settings
(including toolbar, status bar, preview pane, column, and sort settings)
and format settings for sending mail may be lost.
CAUSE
When you install Internet Explorer version 4.0 or Windows 98, Microsoft
Outlook Express is installed as an upgrade to Internet Mail and News. Some
Internet Mail and News settings are not saved during the upgrade Process
because the settings have changed significantly in Outlook Express.
RESOLUTION
After you install Internet Explorer version 4.0 or Windows 98, manually set
any Internet Mail and News settings that were not saved.
MORE INFORMATION
User interface settings and format settings for sending mail are not
retained when you upgrade to Outlook Express version 4.0 or Windows 98. If
you customize these settings in Internet Mail and News, the custom settings
are lost when you upgrade to Outlook Express. All other Internet Mail
and News settings are maintained when you upgrade to Outlook Express.
