Windows CE Does Not Synchronize Files Using Guest Relationship (169444)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows CE for the Handheld PC, Versions 1.0
This article was previously published under Q169444 SYMPTOMS
You cannot synchronize files with a second desktop computer using a guest
relationship.
CAUSE
A Handheld PC (H/PC) can synchronize files only with the computer with
which it has formed a primary relationship.
RESOLUTION
To synchronize files with a second computer, the H/PC must form a new
primary relationship with that computer. This replaces the original
primary relationship. After you have formed the new primary relationship,
you can synchronize files with the second computer.
When you return to the original computer, you must reestablish the primary
relationship with that computer. Changing host computers repeatedly has no
adverse effects.
MORE INFORMATION
You may want to connect your device to a desktop computer to copy a file to your device. However, you may not want to synchronize information or may not plan to connect to the desktop computer on a regular basis. In such a case, set up your device as a guest.
While working as a guest, information can be copied or moved between your device and the desktop computer, you can back up the information on your device, and you can add programs to your device. However, you cannot synchronize information between a guest device and a desktop computer.
A guest device has only a temporary connection with a desktop computer. Once the guest device is disconnected from the desktop computer, settings for the guest device, such as back up and conversion settings, are deleted. The next time the device connects to the desktop computer, you will again need to set it up as a guest device with the desktop computer.
