Error Message Appears When You Change Link Source (168583)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to change the source of a link in Microsoft Excel, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Microsoft Excel 97

Cannot link to the file

Microsoft Excel 7.0

Cannot link to a chart

CAUSE

You may receive either of these error messages if you are trying to change a link to a file that has a name that is longer than 122 characters.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, shorten the length of the file name to 122 characters or fewer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
