WD97: Invalid Page Fault Error When You Click Links Command (168401)

SYMPTOMS

When you click Select All and then click Links on the Edit menu, the following error message may appear:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, the following error message is displayed:
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in module MSO97.DLL at 0137:<address>

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the document contains links to both floating (Float Over Text) and inline objects.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Do Not Select All

Do not select linked floating and inline objects simultaneously before viewing the Links dialog box.

Method 2: Convert the Floating Objects to Inline Objects

  1. Click the linked floating object to select it.
  2. On the Edit menu, point to <object name> Object (for example, Linked Document Object), and then click Convert.

    -or-

    Right-click the object, select Format <object> (for example, Format Picture), and then click the Position tab.
  3. Click to clear the Float Over Text check box.
  4. Click OK.

Method 3: Remove the Links

  1. Click the linked object to select it.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Links.
  3. Click Break Link.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem has been corrected in Word 2000.
