Kids Plus: No Sound After Installing Microsoft Plus! For Kids (168369)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Plus! For Kids, you no longer have sound on your computer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a conflict with the audio codecs installed in Windows 95/98. If the "Netscape ACM wrapper for VOXWARE RT24 speech" audio codec is installed on your computer, you may experience this kind of conflict.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, disable or remove any audio codecs not listed below:

Microsoft CCITT G.711 A-Law and U-Law CODEC
Microsoft IMA ADPCM CODEC
Microsoft ADPCM CODEC
Microsoft GSM 6.10 Audio CODEC
DSP Group TrueSpeech (TM) Software CODEC

To disable an audio codec, do the following:
  1. Click the Start button and point to Settings.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Multimedia.
  4. On the Advanced (Devices in Windows 98) tab, click the plus (+) sign next to Audio Compression Codecs to display a listing of installed audio codecs.
  5. Select the audio codecs you wish to disable, and then click the Properties button.
  6. Select the Do Not Use This Audio Codec option and click OK.
  7. If you want to disable more audio codecs, repeat steps 5 and 6 above.
  8. When you are finished, click OK to close the Multimedia Properties window.
You should be able to hear sound now.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Plus! For Kids version 1.0.
