SUMMARY

Information (the object) created in a Microsoft Word 97 document (the source) can be inserted (linked) into a Microsoft Outlook 97 item (the destination). The linked object in the destination updates when the source changes.

To link a Word document to an Outlook Contact (for example), do the following:
  1. Click to select the notes area of an open Contact.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Object.
  3. In the Insert Object dialog, click "Create from File," then enter the name of the Word document you want to create a linked object from, or click Browse to select from a list.
  4. Select the Link check box, and then click OK.

    NOTE: An embedded object is created if you don't click to select the Link check box. An embedded object becomes a part of the destination. If you double-click an embedded object, it opens in the program in which it was created. Any changes you make to the embedded object are reflected in the destination item.
  5. If you want to display the document as an icon, click "Display as icon."

    NOTE: If you create a linked object from a Word document to an Outlook e-mail message and you want others to be able to edit the linked object, the recipients of the message must have access to the network share the document is stored on, your network must support Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) addresses, and you must type the UNC address for the network share that has the file in the File box. For example, type \\Data\Documents\File.doc
