This article was previously published under Q167940

SYMPTOMS

When using Microsoft Outlook 97 on a Gateway 2000 computer with an internal Telepath Fax Modem (USR Sportster Voice 33600 PnP Fax Modem), you are able to make only one call through the modem's speakerphone during an Outlook session.

CAUSE

There is a problem with the driver supplied for the USR 33600 Sportster voice Modem.

RESOLUTION

Make all voice calls after the first one through the handset rather than the speakerphone.

-or-

Restart Outlook between each voice call.

-or-

Use the US Robotics 28.8 Internal Fax driver delivered with Windows 95. This driver does not support the Caller-ID feature.

NOTE: Outlook does not support the voice capabilities of any modem that advertises a speakerphone capability. It provides only a telephone dialing capability that is similar to the Phone Dialer in Windows 95/98 accessories.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. Start Outlook, using the hardware configuration above.
  2. In Outlook's Contact folder, click a Contact.
  3. Click Autodialer on the Toolbar.
  4. In New Call, click Start Call.
RESULTS: The modem dials and you are able to communicate through the modem's speakerphone. After the call is completed, click End Call and the modem hangs up. The message in the call menu dialog box returns to On Hook and the line is disconnected.

Repeat the above process for a second call and the modem's speakerphone does not work. Pick up the handset and click End Call and the call is connected through the handset.

If you quit and restart Outlook, the speaker will work again for one call.

To Install the USR 28.8 Fax Driver

  1. Quit Outlook.
  2. Click Start on the Windows Taskbar, point to Settings and click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Modems and on the General tab click Add.

  5. In the Manufacturers list, click to select U.S. Robotics, Inc.
  6. In the Models list, click Sportster 28800 Internal and click Next.
