XL97: How to Restore a Built-In Menu (167382)

SUMMARY

When you use the Delete method in a Visual Basic for Applications macro to delete a menu from a built-in menu bar, you cannot restore the menu and all of its associated menu items with one macro command. If you want to delete a menu and then restore it at a later time, use the Visible property to hide the menu.

The following example uses the Visible property of a CommandBar control to hide and restore the Edit menu:

  1. Close and save any open workbooks, and then create a new workbook.
  2. Start the Visual Basic Editor (press ALT+F11).
  3. On the Insert menu, click Module.
  4. In the Visual Basic module window, type the following code: 
          Sub HideMenu()

         CommandBars("Worksheet Menu Bar").Controls("Edit").Visible = False

      End Sub

      Sub ShowMenu()

         CommandBars("Worksheet Menu Bar").Controls("Edit").Visible = True

      End Sub
  5. Switch back to Microsoft Excel (press ALT+F11).
  6. On the Tools menu, point to Macro and click Macros.
  7. Click HideMenu and click Run.

    The Edit menu is hidden from the menu bar.
  8. On the Tools menu, point to Macro and click Macros.
  9. Click ShowMenu and click Run.
The Edit menu (and all of its menu items) is restored.
