SYMPTOMS

When you click the Scan Picture or Digital Camera command in one of the products listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive the following error message
No Scanner Was Found

You must install a scanner and its software before you can use this task.
or the scanner that you are expecting may not be listed in the "Select a scanner" list.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the scanner driver or its unique TWAIN datasource are missing or improperly installed, or if the scanner is not listed by model name.

For example, Hewlett-Packard scanners use a scanner driver called DeskScan II or HP PictureScan.

RESOLUTION

To prepare your scanner for use with one of the products listed at the beginning of this article, do the following:
  1. Install the software (drivers) that came with the scanner.
  2. Verify that you can use the scanner successfully outside of the program.

NOTE: If you have an HP PhotoSmart Digital Camera, Picture It! is your camera software.
  3. Verify that the TWAIN datasource for your scanner is installed:
    1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
    2. In the Named box, type *.ds.
    3. In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
    4. If no datasource (*.ds) file is found, look through the software that was provided with the scanner or the camera to find the TWAIN drivers and install them. Contact the manufacturer of the device if necessary.
    5. If a datasource file is found, right-click the file, and then click Properties. Verify it is the datasource file for your scanner or camera and not for another device.

MORE INFORMATION

Many manufacturers also put TWAIN datasources on their Internet Web pages.
