Cannot Set Up Internet Locator Server (ILS) Version 1.0 with Internet Information Server (IIS) Version 4.0 (166456)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to set up Internet Locator Server (ILS) version 1.0 with Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) version 4.0, you will get one of the following error messages:

Unable to install the network service. Setup cannot continue.

-or-

Error: Unable to start Internet Locator Service. Use the Event Viewer to determine the reason for the failure.

CAUSE

ILS 1.0 is incompatible with IIS 4.0. To install ILS with IIS 4.0, you must have ILS version 2.0, which is a component of Microsoft Site Server.

WORKAROUND

To install ILS 2.0 on the same server with IIS 4.0, you must first stop the IIS Administrator service manually before running the ILS Setup program.

Follow these steps to install the Locator Service:

From Control Panel, open the Services applet.
Select IIS Admin Service, and click Stop.
Install Internet Locator Service version 2.0.
Restart the IIS Administrator Service via Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft Internet Locator Server version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
