PPT97: Cropped PowerPoint Slide Shrinks When Edited (165723)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q165723

SYMPTOMS

If you paste a PowerPoint 97 slide into a Word 97 document, crop the slide object, and then double-click it, the PowerPoint slide shrinks. Every time you try to edit the PowerPoint slide object, it shrinks further.

This symptom is most noticeable if you crop the PowerPoint slide object so that it is a very different shape. The closer the cropped shape is to the shape of the original slide, the less noticeable this symptom is.

WORKAROUND

If you edit a cropped PowerPoint 97 slide object and it shrinks, restore the object using these steps:
  1. Immediately after you edit the slide object, click anywhere in the slide area and then click Undo Object on the Edit menu. This procedure restores the slide object to its original size, but it discards any changes you made to it.
  2. Right-click the slide object. Point to Slide Object on the menu that appears, and then click Open. PowerPoint starts and the slide appears.
  3. Make any changes you want to the slide.
  4. On the File menu, click Update.
  5. On the File menu, click Close & Return to <document name>, where <document name> is the name of your file.
PowerPoint closes and you return to your Word 97 document. The cropped slide image will be updated and its size will not be changed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

There are two ways to edit an OLE object (such as a PowerPoint slide object) in Word 97: in-place editing and open editing. This problem occurs only when you edit the object in-place.

Editing an Object In-Place

Double-click the object. The Word toolbars and menus change to those of the program that created the object, but you can still see the other text and graphics in your document. When you are done editing the object, click outside it. The toolbars and menus change back to those of Word 97.

Editing an Object by Opening the Program (Open Editing)

Right-click the OLE object, point to the object type on the menu that appears, and then click Open. This starts a new session of the program that created the OLE object. When you are done editing the object, click Update on the File menu, and then click Close (or Exit) & Return on the File menu. When the slide object is closed, you will be in the Word document where you can see your changes.
