The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q165368

SYMPTOMS

If you embed a PowerPoint 97 slide object in a Word 97 document and then open that object in its own window to make changes, those changes may not appear when you return to your Word document or, the changes may appear initially but disappear if you edit the PowerPoint slide object again.

CAUSE

This problem only occurs when you open a PowerPoint 97 slide object in its own window to edit it. It does not occur when you edit the object in-place.

RESOLUTION

When you are finished editing a PowerPoint slide object in its own Window, click Update on the File menu and then click "Close & Return to <document name>" on the File menu. By using the Update command first, you assure your changes will be retained.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Opening a PowerPoint slide object in its own window

  1. With the right mouse button, click the embedded PowerPoint slide.
  2. On the menu that appears, point to Slide Object and then click Open.

PowerPoint starts and displays your slide. You can now make changes to that slide.
  3. On the File menu, click Update.
  4. On the File menu, click "Close & Return to <document name>."

Opening a PowerPoint slide object in-place

  1. Double-click the embedded PowerPoint slide.

The toolbars and menus change to those of PowerPoint, but you can still see the rest of your Word document.
  2. To return to your document, click outside the slide area.

The toolbars and menus change back to those of Word.
