Error message when you use "Send To" to send file to PowerPoint (164687)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word 2000
- Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
- Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 97 for Windows
- Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer for Windows 95 1.0
This article was previously published under Q164687 SYMPTOMS
When you point to Send To on the File menu and then click Microsoft PowerPoint in Microsoft Word to send a Word document to PowerPoint, you may receive the following error message:
C:\<windows>\Temp\~present.rtf
Sorry, this type of file cannot be opened by PowerPoint Viewer.
CAUSE
This problem can occur when the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer is installed on your computer.
The installation of the PowerPoint Viewer registers itself as the Microsoft PowerPoint server, thus replacing the PowerPoint program as the PowerPoint server. This means that when Word tries to access PowerPoint, Word is directed to the PowerPoint Viewer instead of the PowerPoint program.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, re-register Microsoft PowerPoint as the PowerPoint server. To do this, follow these steps:
- Quit all open Office programs.
- Click Start and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type powerpnt /regserver and then click OK.
NOTE: Your version of PowerPoint will briefly start up and then quit. This forces PowerPoint to register itself as the PowerPoint server. You can now use the "Send To" feature from Word to send a Word document to PowerPoint, and you can still use the PowerPoint Viewer to view your older PowerPoint files. The viewer will not view PowerPoint 97 or PowerPoint 2000 files, because they will be opened in the PowerPoint program.
