This article was previously published under Q164513

SUMMARY

The Microsoft Personalization System Component Identifier changed from IPS in the pre-release version to MPS in the final released version of Microsoft Commercial Internet System version 1.0.

MORE INFORMATION

Any Active Server Page (ASP) scripts written using the component identification of IPS should be replaced with MPS, such as:
   IPS.PropertyDatabase to MPS.PropteryDatabase
   IPS.Vote to MPS.Vote
   IPS.SendMail to MPS.SendMail

An improper upgrade of a pre-released version of MPS may result in an older script using the IPS component identification to complete or partially complete execution. If this same script is carried over to a second system with a fresh installation of the released version of MPS, the scripts will fail to execute. The reason for this is that the upgraded system's registry contains erroneous references to the old IPS component identifier.

You must complete a remove-all of the previous version of MPS (from that specific version's setup) BEFORE installing an updated version of MPS. After an improper upgrade has occurred, it may leave the registry in an unrecoverable state. You may have to re-install Windows NT to a freshly formatted drive to return the registry to its proper state.
