SYMPTOMS

When you are trying to save a policy file using Policy Editor, the following error message may occur:
An error occurred writing the registry. The file cannot be saved.

CAUSE

The folder has a long file name or the file is not being saved with the .pol extension.

RESOLUTION

In the File Name box, type the path and file name using the MS-DOS (8.3) naming format. For example, type
   C:\Mydocu~1\Config.pol

instead of:
   C:\My Documents\Config.pol

To determine the MS-DOS-format name for a folder, use the DIR command at a command prompt to view the folder's name. Or, use the right mouse button to click the folder in Windows Explorer, and then click Properties on the menu that appears. The MS-DOS-format name is listed on the General tab.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION
