Access Violation in Internet Explorer 3.01 Playing .avi File (162921)

SYMPTOMS

When you are using Internet Explorer to view an .avi file in a local Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) document using Microsoft ActiveMovie, the following error message may occur:
Dr. Watson
An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.
IExplore.exe
Exception: Access Violation (0xc0000005), Address: 0x01487ab8
This error may also occur if you run the .avi file and then quit Internet Explorer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:

  • Install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 2.
  • Remove ActiveMovie. To remove ActiveMovie, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. Click the Install/Uninstall tab, and then click Microsoft ActiveMovie.
    4. Click Add/Remove.
    5. Click OK after Microsoft ActiveMovie has been successfully uninstalled.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet Explorer 3.01 for Windows NT 4.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
