The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Money for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Money 97

This article was previously published under Q162662

SYMPTOMS

If tax information for Schedule E, Other Expense or Schedule F, Other Farm Expense shows as the last item in a Tax Software Report, you may receive the following error message:
There has been an error reading or writing the file '.'
In Money 4.0 the error message is similar to the following:
There has been an error reading or writing the file 'X'
where X is a number.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft has created a self extracting file called Taxusa.exe which contains a tax table that can be used instead of Money's current Tax.tbl to reduce the chances of this error re-occurring.

The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center:

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file. Save the file to a folder on your hard drive and then double-click Taxusa.exe. This extracts three files:
  • Readme.txt
  • Taxusa.tbl
  • Tax.tbl
The Readme.txt contains information on how to use these files. Refer to the "More Information" section below.

MORE INFORMATION

Even with the new USA Tax Table, the error may still occur if the tax information for Schedule E, Other Expense or Schedule F, Other Farm Expense is the last item in the Tax Software Report. To replace the current tax table files do the following:
  1. Close Money.
  2. Replace the existing Tax.tbl and Taxusa.tbl files in your C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System folder with the new files.

NOTE: If you installed Money in a location other than the default location listed above, make sure to copy the files to the correct location.
