Uuencoded Attachments Are Numbered Sequentially in MS Exchange (162351)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 95
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0
This article was previously published under Q162351 SYMPTOMS
When you send messages as attachments using the Internet Mail information
service in Microsoft Exchange (Windows Messaging), the messages are
numbered as Msg0001.txt, Msg0002.txt, Msg0003.txt, and so on.
When you compose a new message, the numbering sequence does not start
over, but instead continues with the next number.
CAUSE
When you send messages using Microsoft Exchange and you include multiple
uuencoded attachments in a message, the counter is not reset and
attachment numbers are incremented in all subsequent messages.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
- Quit and restart Microsoft Exchange. This resets the attachment counter.
- Send the attachments using MIME instead of Uuencode. MIME displays
the attachments correctly.
- Move the information from the attachments into the body of the message
itself.
STATUS
Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here
in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
MORE INFORMATION
The attachment count can be misleading when you receive a message with an
attachment count not starting at one. This could lead you to believe you
have not received all the attachments.
