FP97: Cannot Set Executable Directory on Multi-Homed Server (162243)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft FrontPage 97 for Windows with Bonus Pack
This article was previously published under Q162243 For a Microsoft FrontPage 98 version of this article, see 194275.
SYMPTOMS
When you run FrontPage to administer content on a Web server that
implements software multi-homing, you will not be able to configure
executable folders within your FrontPage Web from FrontPage Explorer.
CAUSE
There is no documented way to specify the Internet Protocol (IP) address
or domain name to be associated with the directive in the configuration
files on a Web server that performs multi-homing. This feature functions
correctly on Web servers that are configured to multi-home with a
separate IP for each domain. FrontPage 97 is not designed to work with
software multi-homing.
RESOLUTION
To enable FrontPage Server Extensions on a multi-homed Web server,
configure the server to multi-home with a separate IP address for each
domain. Netscape refers to this as hardware multi-homing.
MORE INFORMATION
Netscape Corporation defines Software multi-homing as multi-root and
single-root. Multi-root "software" multi-homing occurs when all customers
on a Web server share the same IP address, but each customer has a separate
document root directory. Single-root "software" multi-homing occurs when
all customers on a Web server share the same IP address, and each customer
has a separate subweb under the root Web server content directory. However,
only the actual home page gets redirected to the appropriate page by using
directives in the server configuration file. All links within a single-root
software multi-homed Web site have to be written relative to that home page.
