PPT97: QuickStart Tutorial Doesn't Run from Network Installation (161028)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q161028

SYMPTOMS

Slide Two of the PowerPoint Central presentation (Ppcentrl.pps) contains the following text:

QuickStart is an easy-to-read tutorial that quickly teaches you the fundamentals of using PowerPoint and will save you time when you create presentations.

Beneath this text is a hyperlink called Start. If you installed PowerPoint from a network, and you try to follow the link to QuickStart, you may receive this error message:
Could not open <path>\valupack\tutorial\quickstrt.pps. Please make sure the Office CD is available. If you installed from the network, please ask your network administrator to copy the valupack files also.

CAUSE

The Office and PowerPoint 97 compact discs contain a folder named ValuPack. This folder contains additional fonts, templates, clips, and add-ons for the Microsoft Office 97 products. When you run a network administrative setup of Office or PowerPoint (Setup /A), Setup creates a folder called ValuPack under the Office folder. However, most of the additional content in the \ValuPack folder on the compact disc is not copied to this folder.

One file that is not copied to the network server is Quikstrt.pps. Setup does not copy the Value Pack material to the network server in order to save disk space. The PowerPoint Central presentation tries to link to Quikstrt.pps, but cannot find it.

RESOLUTION

If you want to be able to use the QuickStart tutorial, or the other Value Pack material, you must manually copy the contents of the \ValuPak folder from your Office 97 or PowerPoint 97 compact disc to the \ValuPak folder on your network server.
