Invalid Page Fault Error When Downloading Newsgroup List (160898)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Mail and News 1.0 for Windows 95

This article was previously published under Q160898

SYMPTOMS

When you are downloading a list of newsgroups from a news server, Internet News may display one of the following error messages and require you to close the program:
Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 0137:bff78040.

- or -

Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module MAILNEWS.DLL at 0137:62045187.

CAUSE

There are two possible causes of this error:

  • An entry in the list of newsgroups was not sent correctly.
  • Bad data was sent over the line.

RESOLUTION

Contact your newsgroup provider and let them know about the issue. This issue requires action on the server itself.

MORE INFORMATION

The most common problem is that the wrong format or damaged data was sent. Internet News cannot handle the error that this causes. This most often occurs on servers with group lists in excess of 6000 groups.

Sometimes a server does not send correct line-termination strings to the client. After each group name, a carriage return and line feed (\r\n) pair should be sent. The server may send incorrect line-termination strings such as:

  • rec.cool.newsgroup\r\r\n
  • rec.very.cool.newsgroup\r
