Money 5.0: Unable to Select Correct Loan (160814)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Money 97

This article was previously published under Q160814

SYMPTOMS

In Money version 5.0, if you mark a Loan account as Closed, you may be unable to select the last loan in the drop-down lists. Whatever loan you select, the actual account selected is the account just above it on the list; so you are unable to select the last account on the list.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft does not recommend that you mark Loan accounts as closed.

MORE INFORMATION

If you have more than one closed loan account, you must create dummy loan accounts for each one so you can import the desired loan from the list.

NOTE: Any dummy loans you create show in your account lists and may show in reports such as your Net Worth report. You can customize reports to exclude these loan accounts. This problem is seen in the Import list of the Loan Calculator Wizard and in the list of accounts used when entering a loan payment transaction in the Account Register.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Money version 5.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

If you want to close a Loan account, you can create a new loan account with dummy values. Name this loan so that it sorts alphabetically after your other loans, for example: ZZZZZ.

When selecting a loan in a list box, you must choose the loan below the desired loan. The dummy account you created, which appears at the bottom of the list, allows you to select your actual last loan account.

In some lists you can type the first few letters of the desired loan to bring up the correct loan. The Import option in the Loan Calculator Wizard does not allow this, so you must choose the loan below the one desired.
