Neverhood: Black Square Cursor with Imagine 128 After Exiting (160778)

SYMPTOMS

After you exit The Neverhood your mouse cursor becomes a black square. This occurs if you are using a Number Nine Imagine 128 video card.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you use the Number Nine Imagine 128 display driver, version 4.03.00.2030, copyright Microsoft, which may have been installed by The Neverhood Setup program.

RESOLUTION

Number Nine has a beta display driver that works with The Neverhood. The driver, version 1.13, is available from the company's Web site: This driver has been tested and does not exhibit the behavior symptoms describe in this article. The beta driver for the Number Nine Imagine 128 series is version 1.13.

When the driver is installed, it is listed as version of 1.01.02, copyright Number Nine Visual Technology Corp.

NOTE: The version 2.13 Number Nine Windows 95 driver does not have have DirectDraw acceleration, so the Beta version is preferable.

Installing the Driver

Before you install the new driver, you need to remove the existing driver and settings installed by The Neverhood Setup program. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Delete the following folder from your hard disk.

    C:\Number9

  2. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Display.
  4. Click the Settings tab.
  5. Click Change Display Type.
  6. Next to the Adapter Type, click Change.
  7. Make sure Show All Devices is selected.
  8. From the list of Manufacturers, select:

    Standard Display Types

  9. From the list of Models, select:

    Standard Display Adaptor (VGA)

  10. Click OK, then Close, then click Close again.
  11. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
  12. Follow the instructions provided in the Number Nine Readme.txt to install the new video driver.
