PUB: Setup Can't Write Mspub.inf to Shared Windows (160698)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 97

This article was previously published under Q160698

SYMPTOMS

When running a workstation setup of Microsoft Publisher 97, with Windows 95 being run from a network share, you may get the error:
Setup cannot write MSPUB.INF to <network share>\windows\system
Replace "<network share>" with the appropriate drive or UNC mapping for your network server.

If you ignore this error message, you then receive the following:
Setup cannot write MSGENBW.PPD to <network share>\windows\system
If you ignore this error message, the following error reappears:
Setup cannot write MSGENCOL.INF to <network share>\windows\system
If you ignore the error messages, Publisher setup finishes normally. Publisher runs without errors, but you cannot use Publisher's two outside printer drivers, MS Publisher Imagesetter and MS Publisher Color Printer.

CAUSE

Publisher 97's setup program needs to write the files named in the error messages to the Windows\System folder during installation. Under a shared installation of Windows 95, the Windows\System folder is typically set as Read-only for general users. This prevents Publisher's setup program from writing the Mspub.inf, Msgenbw.ppd, and Msgencol.inf files to this folder.

RESOLUTION

The three files, Mspub.inf, Msgenbw.ppd, and Msgencol.inf, can be copied manually to the <network share>\Windows\System folder. The files are in the root folder of the Publisher 97 CD-ROM.

Alternatively, the system administrator can log on with full privileges and perform a workstation installation of Publisher 97 to the administrator's own account. This writes the three files to the shared Windows\System folder.

Once these files are installed, workstation installations will go smoothly with no error messages regarding the three files.
