SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open more than seven files from a Novell NetWare file server, you get a message that says:
Cannot open file <filename>

-or-

Cannot access file
This problem is likely to happen when attempting to consolidate more than seven files that reside on a Novell NetWare file server.

NOTE: The error messages produced by Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word are similar:

Word

Cannot open the document <filename>

Excel

Cannot open or save any more documents

-or-

Unable to read from disk

CAUSE

Microsoft Office 7.0 applications cannot open more than seven files simultaneously from a NetWare server on a workstation that uses the Novell NetWare Client 32 for Windows 95.

This problem also occurs if the Windows 95 workstation is using the real-mode Novell VLM client.

NOTE: This problem seems to affect any 32-bit application that uses OLE to save files.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, do one of the following:

  • Obtain the update from Novell for the Novell NetWare Client 32 for Windows 95; specifically, get the file C3295d.exe. Run this file and, after all the files are expanded, read the instructions in the file C3295d.txt. In particular, the file Client32.nlm is the component that must be updated to correct this issue. -or-

  • If you are using the Novell VLM client, either use the Novell NETx client or, preferably, install the Novell NetWare 32 for Windows 95 client and apply the patch noted above. -or-

  • Use the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks.
