Money 5.0 ErrMsg: Error Accessing Function (fileaxs.dll) (160332)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Money 97

This article was previously published under Q160332

SYMPTOMS

When starting Windows, you may receive the following error message:
Error accessing function (fileaxs.dll)
When opening Money 5.0, your computer or Money may stop responding, or you may receive the following error:
Money could not update the Payment Reminder because the file fileaxs.dll is either missing or corrupted. If this error continues, try reinstalling Money.
This error may be followed by the first error message indicated above.

CAUSE

This occurs if you install Money in the root of a drive, rather than into a folder. When you install Money, if you switch from the default location of C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money to install Money on a different drive, for example the D: drive, Setup does not designate a folder. If you install Money without typing in a folder name, this error will occur.

This error will also occur if you delete or move Money without running Maintenance Mode Setup to Remove All.

RESOLUTION

If you installed Money in the root of a drive, remove Money using Maintenance Mode Setup and then reinstall.

If you manually removed Money without running Maintenance Mode Setup, reinstall Money and then remove it using Maintenance Mode.

If you manually moved Money to a new location on your computer, reinstall Money from the original disks or CD-ROM and point to the new location.

See the More Information section for steps on running Maintenance Mode Setup.

MORE INFORMATION

Fileaxs.dll is called by the Payment Reminder utility that is installed by Money; Payment Reminder launches whenever you start Windows. If the utility cannot find the Fileaxs.dll file, or if it is corrupted, the errors noted above occur. If Money is installed in the root of a drive, Reminder has difficulty locating the file.

Using Maintenance Mode Setup

To remove Money using Maintenance Mode Setup, do the following:
  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click the Install/Uninstall tab.
  4. Select Microsoft Money 5.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  5. When Microsoft Money Setup starts, click Remove All.
  6. If asked if you want to remove shared components, click Remove None.
NOTE: If you are unable to run Maintenance Mode Setup due to computer hangs, reboot in Safe mode and try to remove Money again. To start Windows 95 in Safe mode, press the F8 key when you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.
