Money 5.0: How to Recategorize Transfers (159886)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use the Change Category function in Money 5.0 to recategorize Transfer, Loan Payment, Buy Investment, and Split transactions, the category does not change. You do not receive any message. See the "Resolution" section for information on how to recategorize these transactions.

When you attempt to use the Change Category function in Money 5.0 to recategorize transactions, you may receive the following message:
One or more of the transactions you've selected is a Transfer, Loan Payment, Buy Investment or Split transaction. These transactions will not be recategorized.
NOTE: Paycheck is also a special category, similar to Split. If you attempt to use the Change Category function on a Paycheck category, you will also receive the error message above.

CAUSE

This is by design. Transfer, Loan Payment, Buy Investment, and Split, are special categories and are not handled like regular categories.

RESOLUTION

You can manually edit these transactions to change the Category field for Split, Loan Payment, Paycheck, and Transfer transactions. For Buy Investment Transactions, you must create a new transaction.

To Recategorize Transfer, Loan Payment, Split, and Paycheck Transactions

To manually recategorize Transfer, Loan Payment, Split or Paycheck transactions, follow these steps:
  1. In the Account Register, locate the transaction to recategorize.
  2. On the View menu, click to clear the check from Transaction Forms.
  3. On the View menu, click All Transaction Details.
  4. In the Category field, select the category for the transaction. If you want to assign a subcategory, TAB to the next field and select a subcategory.
  5. Press ENTER to accept the changes.
NOTE: If you recategorize a Loan Payment, you receive the following warning:
Reassigning this Loan Account payment to a single category will delete all the Loan Account payment information.
Click OK to recategorize the transaction. Click Cancel if you decide you do not want to recategorize this transaction.

Buy Investment

You cannot recategorize Buy Investment transactions. If you want to change the category field for these transactions, you must create a new transaction with the correct category and delete the original transaction.
