SYMPTOMS

When you click Send And Receive in Internet Mail to retrieve new mail, you may receive the following error message:
Explorer has caused an Invalid Page Fault in module Mailnews.dll

CAUSE

This error can occur for any of the following reasons:

  • You may have a damaged message stored in your Inbox on the mail server. When Internet Mail tries to retrieve this message, the error occurs.
  • There may be a "System Administrator - Undeliverable" message on the server containing a "Message.txt" attachment. If the recipient of an e-mail message cannot be found, some mail servers send a "System Administrator - Undeliverable" reply and attach the original message as "Message.txt." When Internet Mail tries to retrieve this message, the error may occur.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Add the Internet Mail service to a Microsoft Exchange profile by following these steps:
    1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and click Mail And Fax.
    2. Click the Services tab, click Microsoft Exchange Server, click Add, click Internet Mail (Internet E-mail under Microsoft Windows NT), and then click OK.
    3. Configure Internet Mail to connect to your mail server.
  2. In the properties for the Internet Mail service, click the Connection tab, and then click the "Work off-line and use Remote Mail" check box to select it.
  3. Open Microsoft Exchange, and then click Remote Mail on the Tools menu.
  4. On the Remote Mail toolbar, click Connect. Remote Mail dials your Internet service provider (ISP) and retrieves the headers of all messages but does not download them.
  5. If there is a "System Administrator - Undeliverable" message on the server, mark it for retrieval and click Connect again. The message appears in the Microsoft Exchange Inbox.
  6. Open Internet Mail and attempt to retrieve the remaining messages from the server.
  7. If the same error message occurs, one of the remaining messages may be damaged. Open Microsoft Exchange and click Deliver Now Using Internet Mail on the Tools menu. This causes all of the messages to be down- loaded to the Microsoft Exchange Inbox.
