Starting an MS-DOS Prompt Restarts Computer in MS-DOS Mode (159763)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start an MS-DOS prompt from within Windows 95, Windows 95 may quit, and your computer may restart in MS-DOS mode.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the MS-DOS Mode check box in the Advanced Program Settings dialog box is selected.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the taskbar, click Properties, and then click the Start Menu Programs tab.
  2. Click Advanced, click Programs, right-click MS-DOS Prompt, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Program tab, click Advanced, and then click the MS-DOS Mode check box to clear it.
  4. Click OK, and then click OK.
  5. On the File menu, click Close.
