SUMMARY

You can use Microsoft Internet News to read bulletin board discussion groups (such as Usenet newsgroups) by using Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP)-based news servers. This article describes how to configure Internet News for Macintosh.

MORE INFORMATION

The Network News Transport Protocol is an Internet standard that is designed to provide access to the news article database on a network server for "reader" clients (such as Internet News). This standard provides the means for the interactive server-to-server article transfer over the Internet.

Running the Internet News client requires that you have an existing news server. If you do not know which news server you should use, contact your Internet service provider.

The first time you run Microsoft Internet News, you are prompted for the following information:

  • The name of your news server.
  • Your account name and password on your news server. Depending on your service provider, you might not need this.
  • Your full e-mail address. This is the address that people should use when responding to a message that you post to a newsgroup. For example, "johndoe@acme.com."
To change this information after Internet News is installed, follow these steps:

  1. On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click News Server
  3. Enter the name of your news server.
  4. Modify the information as appropriate.

NOTE: If your news server requires a user name and password for logging on, click the Server Authentication check box to select it.
  5. Click User Profile
  6. Enter your e-mail address in the Identity box.

NOTE: The e-mail address is required to send new messages in Mail and News. The other information in Preferences is optional
  7. Click OK.
Before you can view Internet newsgroups, you must establish an Internet connection. For information about connecting to the Internet, please contact your Internet service provider.
