How to Configure Microsoft Internet Mail for Macintosh (159720)

Internet Mail is a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol(SMTP)/POP3 mail client. It sends mail to and receives mail from an existing SMTP/POP3 mail server. Before you use Internet Mail, contact your mail administrator or your Internet service provider to find out if your server will work properly with Internet Mail.

The first time you run Internet Mail 1.0, you are prompted for the following information:

• The name of your SMTP and POP3 servers. (These are sometimes, but not always, the same.) These computers send and receive your mail.
• Your full e-mail address. This is the address people should use when sending mail to you over the Internet. For example, "johndoe@acme.com."
• Your account name and password on your mail servers. Your account name is frequently, but not always, the part of your e-mail address to the left of the "@" character.

If you do not know this information, contact your service provider or mail administrator.

Internet Mail 1.0

To add or change this information after Internet Mail 1.0 is installed, follow these steps:

1. On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
2. Click Mail Server.
3. Enter the Mail Server information.
4. Enter your Mail Account information.
5. Enter your Mail Password information.
6. Click User Profile
7. Enter your e-mail address under Identity.
   
   NOTE: The e-mail address is required to send new messages in Mail and News. The other information is optional.
8. Click OK.

When you click Send And Receive on the Mail menu, a Receive Mail dialog box prompts you for your POP3 server user name and password. This is the account name and password that you use to log on to your account.

Internet Mail 1.1

Microsoft Internet Mail and News 1.1 for Macintosh is designed to use Internet Config (and the corresponding Internet Preferences file).

To configure Internet Mail 1.1 SMTP and POP3 server information, follow these steps:

1. On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
2. Click Mail Server, and then click the "Get mail server information from Internet Config" check box to select it.
3. Click User Profile, and then click the "Get user profile information from Internet Config" check box to select it.
4. Click start Internet Config. Note that the next steps assume you are using Internet Config 1.3.
5. Type your personal information, and then click Close. If the Personal dialog box is not visible, click Personal.
6. Click Email to display the Email dialog box.
7. Type your e-mail address (the address to which you want your e-mail sent. It is usually, but not always, the same as your e-mail account in step 8. Or, although it is less common, you may want your e-mail sent to a different address (perhaps, for example, to an assistant who screens your incoming mail).
   
   More common example: MyAccount@example.microsoft.com
   Less common example: MyAssistantsInbox@example.microsoft.com
8. Type your e-mail account (the account from which your e-mail should be fetched). This should be a POP3 server. For example: MyAccount@example.microsoft.com
9. Type your e-mail password.
10. Type your SMTP host (the host to which e-mail is sent). For example: example.microsoft.com.
    
    If you do not know this information, contact your service provider or mail administrator.
11. On the File menu, click Quit, and then click Save.
12. Click OK to close Internet Mail and News Preferences
