XL97: Illegal Operation Saving Workbook (159669)

SYMPTOMS

When you save a Microsoft Excel 97 workbook, you may receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you click Details, a message similar to the following appears:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module EXCEL.EXE at 0137:3010c858.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when all of the following conditions are true:

  • You protect a worksheet in a workbook. -and-

  • You attempt to insert an object into the protected worksheet.

    NOTE: A warning message appears, and you cannot insert the object into the protected worksheet. -and-

  • You then save the workbook.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this problem from occurring, do not insert an object into a protected worksheet. If you must insert an object into a protected worksheet, unprotect the worksheet, insert the object, and then reprotect the worksheet.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
