- Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows
This article was previously published under Q159668 SYMPTOMS
When you create a hyperlink in a workbook, you may receive the following
error message:
Reference is not valid
CAUSE
This problem may occur when all of the following conditions are true:
- You create a hyperlink in a location within the same workbook.
-and-
- You click "Named location in file (optional)" to browse for the location
in the workbook.
-and-
- A chart sheet is the first sheet in the workbook.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.
Move the Chart Sheet
If possible, move the chart sheet to an location in the workbook. After you
move the chart sheet, you can browse to a location in the workbook when you
create the hyperlink.
Type the Location Manually
If you do not move the chart sheet, you cannot browse to a location in the
active workbook. In this case, you must manually type the location in the
"Named location in file (optional)" box.
For example, if there are two worksheets, Sheet1 and Sheet2, in a workbook,
and you want to create a hyperlink in cell A1 of Sheet1 to cell A1 in
Sheet2, do the following:
- Select cell A1 in Sheet1.
- On the Insert menu, click Hyperlink.
- In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, type Sheet2!A1 in the "Named location in file (optional)" box.
- Click OK.
