WD97: Hangs When Printing Multiple Open Documents (157292)

SYMPTOMS

When you open multiple documents in Word and then attempt to print them from the Open dialog box, Word stops responding (hangs).

NOTE: Word may print one of the documents; however, Word then stops responding and prints no other documents.

WORKAROUND

First, use the following steps to close Word:

  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to display the Close Program dialog box.
  2. Click Microsoft Word and click End Task.

    When you are prompted to close the program, click End Task.
To print the documents from Word, use one of the following methods:

Method 1:

Do not open the documents in Word before you print them.

  1. On the File menu, click Open, and then select the documents you want to print.
  2. Right-click the selection (or click Commands and Settings) and click Print.
Method 2:

Open and print each document individually.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the products listed at the beginning of this article.

In Microsoft Word 97 for Windows, you can select multiple documents in the Open dialog box. You can print the selected documents without opening the documents by clicking Commands and Settings, and clicking Print.

If the selected documents are already open in Word and you try to print the open documents from the Open dialog box, Word stops responding. Word prepares to background print the documents but then stops responding.
