PPT97: File Size Increases After Pack and Go (157260)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q157260

SYMPTOMS

If you save a file in PowerPoint 97 and then run the Pack and Go Wizard, the file size may increase up to three times its original size when you unpack the file.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. When the Pack and Go Wizard packs a file, it saves the file in a special file format that both PowerPoint 7.0 and PowerPoint 97 can read directly. A presentation in this dual format has a larger file size than a presentation saved in the PowerPoint 97 file format.

MORE INFORMATION

You can save a presentation to the same special format used by Pack and Go using the following steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Save As.
  2. In the Save As Type list, click PowerPoint 95 & 97 Presentation.
  3. Type a file name in the File name box, and then click Save.
The advantage of this format is that you can view the presentations with all of the following programs:
  • PowerPoint 97 for Windows
  • PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • The 16- and 32-bit PowerPoint Viewers for PowerPoint 7.0
  • PowerPoint for Windows, version 4.0 (with the PowerPoint 7.0 translator installed)
  • PowerPoint for the Macintosh, version 4.0 (with the PowerPoint 7.0 converters installed.)
