The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 97

This article was previously published under Q157209

SUMMARY

If you remove or rename a .gif file that is in the following folder:
   C:\Program Files\Microsoft Publisher\Backgrnd

you receive the following message in the Background and Text colors dialog box:
Publisher cannot convert this picture. This is either because Publisher doesn't recognize the format of the picture you want to add or there was an error loading a graphic converter. Publisher has graphics converters that enable it to recognize most picture formats. Some of these converters may be missing. To install converters for word processors and graphics, run Publisher Setup again.
This error occurs when you click on the name of the scheme that uses that particular .gif file.

MORE INFORMATION

The error message is misleading in this case. The .gif import filter is installed and working correctly.

There are copies of the background .gif files in the Backgrnd folder on the Publisher 97 compact disc. If a file you need has been moved or deleted, you can copy it directly from the compact disc to your \Microsoft Publisher\Backgrnd folder.

If you installed Publisher 97 from disks, you can also run Publisher Setup and click the Reinstall button in the Maintenance Mode dialog box.
