SYMPTOMS
If you are logged on to a server or workstation without administrative
rights, the logoff screen saver included in the Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0
Resource Kits does not function properly.
You will also get the following error messages when attempting to use the utility without administrative rights:
Error encountered while creating registry key. Make sure you have set
values and create subkey permissions.
RESOLUTIONWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
In order for non-administrators to be able to use WINEXIT, you must add
Set Value and Create Subkey permissions for the group Everyone on the
following registry key:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMappings\Control.ini
To do this, use the following steps: NOTE: You must be logged on with administrative rights to make these changes.
- Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Open the following key:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMappings\Control.ini
- On the Security menu, click Permissions.
- In the Name box, click Everyone, and then click Special Access in the Type of Access box.
- Click to select the Set Value and Create Subkey check boxes.
- Click OK, and then click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
