Error Message: The News Server Name Cannot Be Found... (156515)

This article was previously published under Q156515 SYMPTOMS When you attempt to connect to your news server, you may
receive the following error message: The news server
name cannot be found. Please check your Internet News Server configuration,
network connection, and TCP/IP configuration. If this persists, contact your
LAN administrator or Internet provider. When you click OK, you
receive the following error message: Unable to download
the list of newsgroups. The connection was unexpectedly terminated by the news
server. Please try again. If this persists, contact your LAN administrator or
Internet provider. CAUSE You may receive one or more of these error messages if your
local area network (LAN) or Internet connection is not available, is not
working properly, or is not configured correctly. RESOLUTION Verify that your news server information has been specified
correctly. To do so, follow these steps: - In Microsoft News, click Options on the News menu.
- Click the Server tab. If your news server appears in the
News Server(s) list, double-click your news server in the list. Otherwise,
click Add, and then type the name of your news server.
- On the General tab, ensure that your News Server Name and
Logon settings are correct.
- Click the Connection tab, and then verify that the
Connection settings are correct.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then check that the Server Port
Number settings are specified correctly. Click OK.
- Quit and restart Internet News.
After you have verified that the news server has been specified
correctly, try to connect to the news server again. If the problem persists,
verify that your LAN connection or Dial-Up Networking connection is functioning
properly.
