The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Internet Mail and News 1.0 for Windows 95
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 for Windows 95
This article was previously published under Q156188 SYMPTOMS
After you install Microsoft Internet Mail and News version 1.0, you may
experience one or more of the following symptoms:
- The shortcuts for Internet Mail and Internet News do not appear on the
Programs menu.
- You are unable to start Internet Mail or Internet News when you click
the Mail button on the toolbar in Internet Explorer and then click Read
Mail or Read News.
- The Internet Mail and Internet News files are not present in the
Windows folder.
CAUSE
This problem can occur when the Grpconv.exe file in the Windows folder is
missing or damaged.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Rename the Grpconv.exe file (if it exists) in the Windows folder.
- Extract a new copy of the Grpconv.exe file from your original Windows
95 disks or CD-ROM. The Grpconv.exe file is located in the following
locations:
- The Win95_11.cab cabinet file on the Windows 95 CD-ROM.
- The Win95_17.cab cabinet file on the and Windows 95 OEM Service
Release 2 (OSR2) CD-ROM.
- The Win95_11.cab cabinet file on disk 11 of the original Windows 95
DMF floppy disks.
- The Win95_17.cab cabinet file on disk 17 of the original Windows 95
non-DMF floppy disks.
For information about using the Extract tool, please see the following
article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
129605 How to Extract Original Compressed Windows Files
- Restart your computer.
- Reinstall Microsoft Internet Mail and News from the online source from
which you originally installed it.
MORE INFORMATION
When you install Internet Mail and News, the Setup program modifies the
RunOnce registry key so that Grpconv.exe is run after the file copy
process is finished and your computer restarts. When Grpconv.exe runs
after your computer restarts, it creates the shortcuts for Internet Mail
and Internet News on the Programs menu and creates the files in the
Windows folder that are used to start Internet Mail and Internet News. If
Grpconv.exe is unable to run, the shortcuts on the Programs menu and the
files in the Windows folder are not created, causing the problems
described in this article to occur.
