PUB: Outside Printing Fails When Printing to EPS File (156159)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Publisher 97, when used with:
    • the operating system: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

This article was previously published under Q156159

SYMPTOMS

When using Microsoft Publisher Outside Printing feature to print your publication to a PostScript printer for a commercial printing service you may receive the following error:
You are attempting to create a multi-page EPS file. Please print a single page to ensure that EPS output is correct.

CAUSE

This error occurs if you have configured your PostScript printer driver to create an Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) file instead of a standard PostScript print file.

The PostScript print driver generates this error when the driver detects that you are attempting to print more then one page of information to an Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) file. The error occurs any time you are using Publisher's Outside Printing feature to print to a Postscript printer that has been set up to generate an Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) file rather then a Postscript (PS) print file.

When you use Publisher's Outside Printing feature, multiple pages are printed to the selected printer driver. This triggers the error.

RESOLUTION

If you set the PostScript printer driver to generate a standard PostScript print file you will not receive this error when you attempt to Print to Outside Printer from within Publisher.

If your service bureau specifically needs an EPS file, do not use the Print to Outside Printer feature. Use the standard Print command instead. Remember to print each page as a separate print job.
