SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a template in Works 3.0, you may receive the following error message:
Msworks Caused a General Protection Fault in Msworks.exe at 0004:190B

CAUSE

This error can occur when you exceed the maximum number of characters contained in the combination of template names and template category names.

WORKAROUND

Since this limit cannot be increased, you can use one of the workarounds listed below:

Remove some of the templates you do not use.

-or-

Edit the Msworks3.ini file, abbreviating the template information to allow more templates to be used. To edit the Msworks3.ini file, do the following:

NOTE: Use caution when editing the Msworks3.ini file. Changes to this file other than those listed below may affect the operation of the program, and may require Works to be reinstalled to correct the problem.

  1. Click Start and then click Run.
  2. Type Msworks3.ini and click OK.
  3. Scroll to the section named [Templates].
  4. Abbreviate some of the category or template names where possible. For example, a line that reads:

    Name2=Mortgage and Loan Analysis; 14; 802; 2

    could be changed to:

    Name2=Mtg/Loan Anal; 14; 802; 2

    This change would free up 13 characters.
  5. When you finish abbreviating names, click Save on the File menu.
  6. On the File menu, click Exit.
You will now be able to open or create new templates in Works.

MORE INFORMATION

Works can store up to 1,790 characters for the combination of template categories, and template names.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Works for Windows version 3.0. This problem was corrected in Works versions 4.0, 4.5, 4.5a for Windows 95.
