SYMPTOMS

If you run Publisher under Windows NT and are set up to print to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4-series printer, your Fancy First Letters may appear and print too small.

This problem occurs if you use one of the more common TrueType fonts, such as Arial or Times New Roman. It does not occur under Windows 95.

CAUSE

The LaserJet 4-series printers have some of the common TrueType fonts built in to them. These internal TrueType fonts are not identical to the software-only TrueType fonts you may have installed in Windows. The differences between the printer and the software-only versions of the TrueType fonts cause this problem.

RESOLUTION

If you select some text and then click Character on the Format menu, you can see which fonts are liable to be affected by this. The affected fonts have a printer icon next to their names. If you choose fonts that do not have the printer icon next to their names, this problem does not occur.

If choosing a different font is not possible, you can try one of the following techniques to work around this issue.

Method 1: Use WordArt Frames to replace Fancy First Letters

Turn off the Fancy First Letters in your text frame. Draw WordArt frames to replace them.

Method 2: Print using a different printer driver

If your LaserJet has a PostScript option (this is built in to some models, such as the HP LaserJet 4SI), print using the PostScript version of the driver. If your LaserJet does not have a PostScript option, try printing using the LaserJet III driver. For more information about changing printer drivers under Windows NT, please consult the Windows NT Help and documentaion.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows NT versions 3.51 and 4.0.
