MOFF: Setup Installs Duplicate Extensions and Control Panels (155074)

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Extensions Manager to disable all extensions and control panels and then reinstall Office, Word, Microsoft Excel, or PowerPoint, you may notice the following behavior:

You have two copies of each extension and control panel that Office installs. One copy will be in the active folder and one one copy will be in a disabled folder.
The Extensions Manager list shows multiple copies of the Office extensions and control panels.
You receive the following error message when you manipulate Office extensions and control panels with the Extensions Manager:
An Extension could not be moved because a duplicate already exists in the target folder. Replace: <name of item>?

CAUSE

The Extensions Manager hides extensions and control panels from programs by moving them out of their respective active folders (active folders appear with an icon). The Microsoft Office Setup program searches the active folders to verify the existence of extensions and control panels. Therefore, the Setup program installs new copies of any extension not currently located in the active folders.

RESOLUTION

If you currently have this problem, delete any extra copies of extensions and control panels that appear within the inactive folders.

A complete installation of Office 4.2.x adds the following items:

   Microsoft OLE Extension
   Office4.2x Update for Power Mac
   Shared Code Manager

NOTE: The Setup program for Office 4.2.1b does not install the Office 4.2x Update for Power Mac extension. Office 4.2.1b owners who need the extension must install it manually.

MORE INFORMATION

When you use the Extensions Manager to disable an extension or control panel, the Extensions Manager moves that item to a temporary holding folder (this process makes the item inactive). The temporary holding folders, which appear in the active System folder, are listed in the following table.

Programs designed to look into the active Extensions and Control Panels folders will no longer find those items.

NOTE: Many third-party extension and start up utilities have a similar behavior.
