- Microsoft Internet Mail and News
This article was previously published under Q154148 SYMPTOMS
When you try to use Internet News to download messages in a newsgroup, you
may receive the following error message:
The headers could not be downloaded.
The server you are connected to does not support a command
(XOVER) which is required by Internet News.
CAUSE
The server you are connecting to does not support the XOVER command.
MORE INFORMATION
XOVER is an extension to the Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP) that
provides an efficient mechanism for retrieving a batch of article headers.
Although it is an extension, XOVER has become a standard for header
download and is supported by the majority of current news server software.
The current version of Internet News requires the XOVER command to work
properly.
XHDR is an older, common, but less efficient extension to the NNTP
protocol that provides a mechanism for retrieving a single header
property for a batch of articles (for example, the Subject field for each
article in a newsgroup). Downloading headers using the XHDR extension
requires a separate command to be issued to the server for each header.
The current version of Internet News does not support XHDR.
